Case-mix adjusted 30-day mortality after receiving SACT in England, Jan 2017-Nov 2020

Introduction

This app is a tool to accompany the Case-mix adjusted 30-day mortality post systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) analysis reports. It provides interactive plots and tables to combine and present the data from these reports. 30-day mortality rates post-SACT for each cancer site are displayed on interactive funnel plots and tables. Each circle on the funnel plot represents an NHS trust; those shown above the upper dotted line (+3 standard deviations) are identified as outliers.

The original workbooks and accompanying documents can be found on the SACT reports page of the SACT chemotherapy dataset webpage.

  • The August 2020 CMAR workbook reviewed patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2017 being treated for lung, gastric, pancreas cancer, and cancer of unknown primary (CUP) in 2017-2018 (depending on the site).
  • The November 2020 CMAR workbook reviewed patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2018 being treated for bowel, breast, myeloma, and ovarian cancer in 2018-2019 (depending on site).
  • The May 2021 CMAR workbooks reviewed patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2018 being treated for prostate cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in 2017-2019 (depending on the site).
  • The Sep 2021 CMAR workbooks reviewed patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2018 being treated for follicular lymphoma in Jan 2017-Nov 2020.

In advance of publications we send the workbook to NHS trusts for review, giving them the opportunity to provide a statement to accompany their data. We have included a copy of these statements in the companion brief document for each release. In most cases these data have helped trusts identify and amend problems with submission of data. We have also included a table to present the trusts identified as outliers, those with no data, and those we excluded due to low data completeness.

In addition, a Toolkit document was published to help with use and interpretation of these data.

The ICD-10 codes and period of treatment activity used for each cancer site in this app are as follows:

Notes

This work has been produced by The National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service.
  1. SD = standard deviation
  2. When Number treated < 10 the adjusted 30-day mortality rate calculation is based on fewer than 10 patients and is therefore unlikely to be statistically robust.
  3. Please note: some trust mergers have taken place between these data releases, thus a small number of trust names/codes will differ between cancer sites:
    • * indicates that this trust name reflects mergers up to June 2020
    • ** indicates that this trust name reflects mergers up to August 2020
    • *** indicates that this trust name reflects mergers up to June 2021
